FORD MUSTANG GT4 WINS IN VIRGINIA
ALTON, VA – August 26, 2019 – Nate Stacy and Kyle Marcelli, co-drivers of the No. 60 Ford Mustang GT4 won on Saturday, at Virginia International Raceway in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, GS class. This marked KohR Motorsports first win of the 2019 season.
“Congratulations to KohR Motorsports, Nate, and Kyle,” said Doug Yates, President and CEO of Roush Yates Engines. “The team worked hard all day and to see them on the podium with their first win at VIR is pretty special.”
In lingering wet weather conditions, the two-hour IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge series race came down to a one-lap shoot out, after a caution came out in the last ten minutes of the race. The field went green with just enough time to complete a one lap sprint around the 3.27-mile circuit. During the restart there was contact between the leader No. 69 McLaren and a hard charging No. 7 Porsche, pushing the No. 69 off track. This put the Ford Mustang in second position.
While the No. 7 Porsche went on to cross the finish line first, a post-race penalty was assessed for the incident, and the win was ultimately awarded to the No. 60 KohR Motorsports Ford Mustang GT4 of Marcelli and Stacy.
“I was a bit surprised to see it go green, to be honest with you,” said Marcelli. “I knew it was going to be high risk. You’re either going to come out a big winner or a big loser, so I was kind of in survival mode. I just wanted to bring it home and get a respectful result.”
“It was a crazy end of the race, but it couldn’t have gone any better, it was super awesome. Thanks to everyone at KohR and Ford Performance, it was great racing,” commented Stacy in Victory Lane.
In addition, the Ford GTs competed in the Michelin GT Challenge at VIR. Ford Chip Ganassi Racing teammates, Richard Westbrook and Ryan Briscoe finished P5 while Joey Hand and Dirk Müller finished P6.
IMSA will head to the West Coast in September to Monterey, California, home of the IMSA Monterey Grand Prix.
The NASCAR Xfinity Series was in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. The No. 22 Team Penske Ford Mustang driver Austin Cindric was on a mission after pitting for tires during a late race caution. Cindric drove his No. 22 Mustang from twentieth all the way up to finish P2. Ford teammates Chase Briscoe finished P7 and Cole Custer P10.
