In the first part of this Power Module Video series, the team at Ford Performance has spec’d out the complete kit they make for swapping a modern 5.0L Coyote engine into just about anything, a total breeze. For the overview of what’s behind all of this, Mike Robins, the Ford Performance Parts Crate Engine Manager, breaks it down. The idea started with the fact that they wanted to offer a complete modern powertrain option for virtually any vehicle out there, and not just limited to cars Ford makes. They also wanted to be able to offer both a manual and an automatic version with the Coyote engine, and all of its components.
The engine used in the Coyote Power Module kit is a Coyote 5.0L out of a 2017 Mustang GT, and makes 435 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. For the automatic version, they have the engine, flexplate, torque converter and 6R80 6-speed automatic transmission. In the manual version, they have the engine, flywheel, clutch, and 6-speed manual Tremec transmission.
Both kits come with the wiring harness, PCM, air box, and throttle pedal; basically, they provide everything you need to make the components all work together for a complete drop-in project. They solve the mystery consumers run into when they buy the components separate and end up with mismatched parts for their swap.
Ford really put a lot into the Coyote engine, which makes it a perfect candidate for engine swaps. It features leading engine technology like variable cam timing, intake manifold runner control, and many other features that make it a powerful, fuel efficient engine with great low end torque and drivability. Another thing to note about making the swap with this kind of engine kit is, you can pop into your local Ford dealer and buy parts for it since it’s the powertrain meant for a 2017 Mustang GT, there is no hunting down obscure parts for outdated engines and transmissions. Both modules mentioned in the video are here M-9000-PMCM & M-9000-PMCA.
